When my parents underwent major renovations, the contractor was really smart about the psychological craziness it causes. So everything was moved into one room with walkable rows and then a sheet was tacked from floor to ceiling to block it from view. It really helped keep the crazy feeling from overwhelming them.

But I get it. Not being able to deal with it has to drive you nuts. I advise breathing.

And good luck on making the right decision. Using the budget as a guide is a good idea. You can always take it on another time, if you decide it's needed.
