I have no idea what happened in this person's life or even what sort of person he was but I think it is terribly sad that not a single one of his children cared enough to be there when he died.

What a sad story... as you say, we don't know the particulars, but just how empty it seems that despite anything that might have happened still none of the children wanted to be there during these final moments.
