Why, yes, I am making up for my lack of posts, lately.
Between the ongoing rewatch/discussion with
de23 on instant messenger, season 5 texts from
dombede, discussion about season 1-2 at
_leigh_leigh's journal, and replying to various and sundry folks about season 8 episodes, I really feel that I am getting my "Let's talk SPN" fix.
It's a fun time to be me, fangirl discussion wise! However, because I seem to be in so many different seasons, my thoughts are all over the place, lately.
I really enjoyed "As Time Goes By", though it also, somehow, left me wanting. I can't quite put my finger on why. I loved Henry, even though he irritated me, initially, with his disdain for Sam and Dean and "hunters." Maybe, after that comment, I wanted him to know a little more about his grandsons and their Road So Far. He redeemed himself when he tried to go back. IDK, I need a re-watch to suss it out. What I do know is that I thought it went so far in explaining John's motives for involving his sons in his quest for the YED. He really did see it as keeping his family safe and together even if it wasn't the best childhood for them. I have always been a John apologist because even though he let his obsession drive him to being a questionable father and provider, I do feel that he loved his sons, too. After this episode, I can also see that he would see this as a better alternative than abandoning them for the hunt would have been. It also explains why he was so hard on Sam when Sam chose to leave for Stanford, which was so very hard for me, as a parent, to understand. Your children grow up. It is expected that they will make their own way and will, for the most part, abandon you. Sure, he was very young and couldn't possibly be aware of some of the similarities that can be seen between Sam and Henry but he was old enough to feel the pain of being abandoned by his father.
Alaina Huffman was FANTASTIC as Abaddon! (and I know that Abaddon is a real name but it certainly makes it a great choice for this demon as it sounds similar to abandon) Seriously, I think they killed "her", and Henry off too soon! When the Ruby knife didn't work on her, I was like "come on! How convenient" but then it dawned on me that I don't think they ever tried to use the knife on Lilith and Azazel was long gone by the time it came into the boys' possession. Have they ever tried to use it on Crowley? I don't think so. We know that the Colt worked on Azazel but, of course, not Lucifer, so there's precedent for this sort of thing. I also loved her cool superpower. I hope we see her again as she's an intriguing baddie.
Henry had some pretty nifty tricks of his own, too. I don't see this as a complete retcon. Sure, none of the hunters knew anything about it but the MoL appear to be a very secretive group and they seem to have all been killed off. The hunters we have met thus far are not the most trusting sort so it stands to reason if any of them knew about this super secret society, they certainly weren't sharing. Hunting's a dangerous business and a person with such knowledge could very well be killed off before passing it on. Plus, I've always wondered how Samuel Colt learned what he knew; where he learned to make the Colt in the first place. If I recall, he wasn't even familiar with the term "Hunter" when Sam used it. Could he have been A MoL? Also, the series does allude to John's importance, too. After all, there had to be something about the Winchester bloodline, apart from the Michael vessel thing, that made the match between Mary and John A Very Big Deal. I also love the thematic symmetry, here, which
pocochinasums more succinctly in her review than I ever could:
"There are other thematic issues that make those two families counterparts. The brawler Campbells are also Lucifer's bloodline, inheritors of a tradition of free-thinking, which manifests both as Mary's and Sam's rebellions and the slightly more democratic hunter society. Michael's vessels, interested in the stability provided by ruthlessly-policed community norms, also established the "legacy" system Dean both embraces and disdains."
As for the Men of Letters and the new additions to the mythology. I think I find it more interesting than the search for the tablets, to tell the truth. I can't wait to see what they do with it. Plus, Sam and Dean sooooo need a batcave!
Even though I have been one who is enjoying the season overall, It has been good to see Sam and Dean back in the game these past few episodes, so to speak. Of course, I have always been a sucker for Sam in Danger! and Protective! Dean to the rescue. However, in this episode, I think it would have been even better if their situations had been reversed. Sam needs to Save Dean and Dean really needs to be Saved by Sam. And while I realize that Dean is, somehow, the unofficial narrator of this whole series and sort of the focal point of most all of the relationships that involve them both, I think it would have been great seeing Sam getting to know his grandfather and working with him to save Dean from Abaddon. I think part of the problem with some folks' take on Sam is because Dean informs our (the viewer) perspective more often than not. You always have to work a little harder, especially since season 4, to see what makes Sam tick; to see why he does what he does; to understand his perspective. Mostly, I am a fan of this more subtle handling because it makes me think about his motivation and because Sam truly juxtaposes Dean buuuuut it also makes me sad that it hasn't done the perception of Sam's character any favors. IDK. I'm still thinking about it.
I'm also sharing recs, courtesy of
ash48 because they totally made my morning coffee way more enjoyable and sharing is good.
First, a fantastic Picspam (and only spoilery if you find pictures of Sam and Dean spoilery)
D is for Dean
S is for Sam
And, of course, a vid, Winchester Thrift Shop by
deirdre_c (only spoilery if seeing the Winchesters in various outfits and/or "disguises" is spoilery for you.) HYSTERICAL. I've already watched it 3 times. The lyrics, especially "I'm gonna wear this big ass coat" and the accompanying clips had me ROFL!!! (warning if young folks nearby, there's a few f-bombs)
Now, a few incidental, unrelated comments.
My Zumba class has brought out a hula hoop (weighted) and though I have NEVER been able to do this and was doubtful that I ever could, I find that I have been getting better! Of course, I think the weighted one is bigger and easier but I couldn't do that one at first, either. It's really too bad that I can only go once a week as the other class coincides with my late clinic day.
de23, I made the maple walnut muffins, though I had to substitute a gluten free baking mix for the almond meal and the Pig only had sweetened coconut (but still not too many sugars). I also only have a regular muffin pan. If anyone is interested, calories per regular muffin-143; fat-6.28; carb-19; fiber-1.8, protein-3.38. Of course, I don't know how it all breaks down if you use the almond meal/flour. They tasted the same..LOL. I cannot discount calories no matter what plan I am on so I definitely only left a few out and froze small serving portions.
I have been keeping up with Downton Abbey and I am still pretty interested with the exception that the Bates prison drama needs to GO AWAY NOW. They are dragging that out way too long for my tastes.
