Doomseekers and Naysayers
Dec. 20th, 2004 05:33 pmBe warned...I am hormonal, I have a headache, and cliches abound!
But, I am sick to the teeth of Doomseekers and Naysayers. To whom do I refer, you ask? Well, I refer to those fandom people who are so quick to rant and rave about season nine long before we even get into season nine. Heck, the second half of season eight has yet to air! They are bringing me down!
With the news that Ben Browder is joining the cast of sg-1 and the news that Claudia Black is going to be back for a five episode arc, I have already encountered cries of gloom and doom. It's going to be "Farscape sg-1". Next they are going to "replace Thor with Rygel"(somebody or other). Blah, blather, blah. Oh for the love of pearl! Here in the states, we have yet to even see Claudia Black's character and up till a few minutes ago, I didn't have a clue where they were going with the Ben Browder character. I have never watched Farscape although I hear that the actors are pretty dang good and I was rather excited to hear the news. So, here we have characters we haven't met yet and stories that have yet to be written and *STILL* people find something to complain about. Somebody call a Waaaaaa-mbulance!
It's Absurd with a capital "A" Can we at least wait and see? Is that too much to ask???
I remember, long years ago, way back in season 5 when "gasp" MS decided to leave the show. I was totally floored and to say I was disappointed is an understatement. People said then,it is the end of the world. Armageddon has arrived. Blah, blather, blah. But, it wasn't! Yes, I sorely missed my beloved Daniel Jackson (sigh) and awaited each episode in which he was to guest star like a kid on Christmas Eve. Does that mean that all of the other stories were utter drivel? Had the show gone down the tubes? Jumped the shark?
Well, no...or we wouldn't be where we are today with SEASON NINE looming near.
The next foray into doomsville came with RDA's reduced scheduling. Well, that's it. We may as well throw in the towel, shut 'er down, the fat lady is singing. After all, none of the other characters are remotely interesting enough to be able to hold our interest. Blah, blather, blah.
Do what? You mean to tell me that you have watched a show for seven seasons and you aren't the teensy weensiest bit invested in any of the other players? Not a single one of them!? How can this be? Heck, poor ole Jonas was only here for one season and there were many, myself included, that was sad to see him go. Yes, I miss seeing Jack and yes, there was quite a bit of grasping at straws in the beginning trying to "explain" his absence but, with his promotion, I think it is now being handled quite well.
Let's face it, if you are only in it for one story arc or only in it for one particular character, then you are bound to be disappointed with the changes. If, in your perspective, the show is crap and has been crap for quite some time, the horse is dead...stop beating it! I was lucky. I got to learn way back in season six that this wasn't necessarily the case where I was concerned and, since then, I have felt free to sit back and enjoy the ride.
I just wish the Pessimism Police would stop trying to pull me over!

Date: 2004-12-21 01:16 am (UTC)Sure, yeah, I'm a little curious to see how these changes will affect the overall product - and with change always comes a wee bit of apprehension. But I'm also excited, because with change there's also the potential of something really, really wonderful happening.

Exactly.
I think there is a huge difference between debating the pros and cons of a particular episode or story arc and denigrating the entire show.

Date: 2004-12-21 03:06 am (UTC)You know my personal bitch so there's no reason to carry on with it here. I honestly don't think the show is as good now as it was in season six when MS was gone. I think they are working alot harder to give us good material and it's starting to show. Which is totally independent of my imminent depression regarding RDA's departure.
To each their own. Even if I stop watching after this year I'm really thankful for the friends I've made. (((((((((Glenda)))))))))

Date: 2004-12-21 09:45 am (UTC)i totally agree with you Glenda. But i also see why RURAL feels how she does.
Did I want a S9? Not really. I've very mixed feelings on it. I dont want the SG1 to finish... But I dont want it spoiled.
I've decided to watch it untill the end though. Mainly because of what the series has given me. In other words: you guys. So i'll see it through.

Date: 2004-12-21 03:02 pm (UTC)This Ben Browder thing has me intrigued. I'm excited that they're planning to "reinvent" some aspects of the show. Of course, I would be ecstatic if Sam and Jack could finally get together, but I'm determined to keep watching even if that doesn't happen.

I am sure there are many who feel as you do (about season six) just as I am sure that there are many who feel seasons five and six weren't quite up to snuff as I feel..even though some of my favorite episodes/story arcs aired during those seasons. It was more a question of number of great eps that I would actually rewatch several times. But, that is the cool thing about different perspectives. We aren't all going to agree all the time. BUT. (with a capital "B") At least those eps have aired and we all have every right to weigh the pros and cons of those episodes since we have ACTUALLY seen them.
If someone is certain from the get go that they are going to dislike season nine then I am sure that they will. Self fulfilling prophecy and all that.

Date: 2004-12-22 02:53 am (UTC)But, only time will tell. I remember how they totally ruined Sliders in the final two seasons. But, I still think it was a great series up till that point and I would watch the DVD's should I find them in my Christmas stocking. But, even knowing how it ended doesn't tarnish the whole thing for me. It wouldn't ruin my enjoyment of "the good years". LOL!

Date: 2004-12-22 02:56 am (UTC)I have to say I am totally intrigued by the Ben Browder thing. Which is amazing since I have never even watched Farscape. I guess it is knowing how people loved that show so much. So, I am still excited.
Season 9
Date: 2004-12-23 01:58 am (UTC)Whatever happens to the show, it the great friends that it brought into my life that matters. : )
Re: Season 9
Date: 2004-12-23 10:10 pm (UTC)And that is it. After eight years, this show is still my favorite. Heck, it is practically the only thing I watch on TV. (besides HGTV..LOL)
On another note, I have been meaning to check out your new vid but haven't really had the time as of yet. I hope to DL it tonight. I actually just worked a 22 hour shift! We had a bit of a weather situation and no one could make it in except the people who were already there. It had a slumber party feel....except that it was work. LOL!!
