Okay, please allow me to smack myself on the forehead for that obvious bit of stupidity. Obviously, when I typed in what you are supposed to type in, the LJ function read it as a command and then did it. Sheesh!
You are supposed to type the word "strike" at the beginning, and then "/strike" at the end - but put it inside the little < > symbols.
