Lousy Birthday present

Well, today Brandon is 15. He didn't get his driver's permit but he did get the Flu. I was at lunch with my preceptor and he called from school. I told him to have the school nurse take his temp and call me back (because I am that suck it up nurse parent). He called back with 102.6 and, along with his other symptoms, I was pretty sure he had it. My preceptor agrees to see him and I pick him up from school, bring him in, and while he is waiting I see patients with my preceptor because every hour counts! How sad is that?? (I did the same thing when he had surgery for his broken arm at the hospital where I work. Heck, if I had to be there all day, I may as well get paid for it. Plus I had missed a couple of days because of the injury and the first surgery at a different location. It was interesting to have the surgeon come to the ER to give me report, though)

His rapid flu was showing positive for A before 5 minutes had elapsed. Hopefully, since this all started today and he already has a dose of Tamiflu on board, he won't have it quite so bad.

Oh but what a completely sucky birthday, even if he thinks it is great not to have to go to school for the rest of the week.

Oh dear! I hope he bounces back very quickly!

Oh, that is a pretty lousy way to spend a birthday. Hope he feels better very soon. (And doesn't share his flu in any way whatsoever with you.)

Happy birthday to you, indeed! And I just have to laugh about you going to see patients while he's waiting. I'm a doctor kid. SO typical!

Hopefully he'll do okay with it. Everyone I know who's had it has been really sick for DAYS and then they just suddenly break the fever and feel better. Tired, but better.

It could be worse, though. My brother holds the record in our family:
Age 5 - Chickenpox, no birthday party
Age 6 - Mumps, no birthday party
Age 7 - Fifth Disease, no birthday party
Age 8 - Stomach flu, no birthday party
He couldn't win for losing.
