After waiting forever, it seems, and suffering due to my total abstinence from spoilers, I was SO ready for this new episode.

It delivered! Alas, it has only whetted my thirst for reading ALL the spoilers even more. But I am still being strong!

What I Loved:

Oh my goodness, I cannot even contain my glee that Charlie has read ALL of the Carver Edlund Supernatural books. I love it when folks know what Sam and Dean have done and they allude to the past. Love, Love, Love

I like Charlie. I like how she informs the geek, fangirl view without being insulting, something I think this show typically does well. I know that there are those that can take her or leave her but I have liked her more and more with each appearance.

Loved the interspersing of quotes "come with me if you want to live" and "I love you. I know." I did think that that scene with Dean was touching and I got all downright choked up when she is reading to her mom.

I thought that Sam had some pretty hilarious dialogue in this episode and his reaction to Charlie's comment about his love life. Fantastic!! He plays the straight man more often than Dean and this was fun to see. As was all his woobie, these trials are taking a toll on me but good and I am beginning to look like crap (but in that Still Totally Hot way that only the magic of TV makeup can achieve) Ahhhh, vitamin H/C, right? Why am I such a sucker for this? If ever I had a bulletproof kink!!

And, of course, All The Broments!!! Along with the word "Broment," of course.

What gave me pause: Not too many quibbles. I thought that this convenient, different sort of djinn and djinn lore and, would you look at that, Dad's journal just so happens to have all the information was a tad contrived. (Unless I misinterpreted that scene and it was down to MoL reference material. That, I can hand wave a bit more)

I also knew by the books coroner was the baddie mainly because she was such an obvious obstacle to Dean and Charlie even seeing the body.

I thought the dreamscape was a little underwhelming but the real reason why she was stuck in the loop was well done. (As was her backstory) And Dean being astute was pretty awesome, too.

It is a little sad that when a public official behaves like they should (really chain of custody is important in criminal cases) then suddenly become the main suspect.

This was a good episode. I like Charlie and hope to see her again. It was nice to see some sick Sam as well.

I know, right? I'm so accustomed to handwaving all the medical and legal aspects of this show that I am totally taken aback when the rules are followed. But that is what made me go hum and suspect that she was the MotW

Hee!

You know, my work schedule doesn't quite promote my post ep fangirling as Thursday is my late clinic and I'm typically too tired to think. Then I read other reaction stuff and I want to play too but my brain is mush and I'm like "but I'm tiiiiiirrrreeeeed"

Oh, but [livejournal.com profile] ash48 bringing to my attention just how much the batcave entrance resembles a Hobbit hole made me gasp in surprise and then feel too stupid for words!!! I mean, how could I not have caught such an obvious resemblence?!?

It's totally great, though!! And gives me even more reason to love this show!!!

It was a nice ep with lots of good stuff! I didn't like it quite as much as Taxi Driver and Goodbye Stranger, but close.

Is there a fan consensus on what the trials are actually doing to Sam? Is he turning into something else? I'm thinking about Cass's line about changes on the subatomic level.

I really, really liked it, as I do the episodes you mentioned. I do feel it was better paced than Taxi Driver.

I haven't heard any fan consensus but that may be due to me doing my very best to avoid the spoilers and when you start perusing theories, spoilers inevitably creep in.

I have been trying to speculate as to what is going on with Sam, exactly. It crossed my mind that if these were trials set forth by God that he couldn't very well be tainted by the demon blood or maybe by his status as Lucifer's vessel and would need a purification as it were. Or, that he must undergo some sort of physical change to be able to complete the third trial, though I cannot imagine that being sick and weakened would be the best way to go. Of course the first two trials have been very task oriented and I wonder if the final trial will be more internal.

I tried to remember what Kevin says when he translates the tablet and then just gave up and googled it

"whosoever chooses to undertake these tasks should fear not danger nor death nor a word I think means getting your spine ripped out through your mouth for all eternity”

Which doesn't really tell us much. I will say several episodes in this season have concentrated on Fathers (and Grandfathers) and sons (Or Mother and Daughter as the case was with Charlie) but I don't know if that has any significance other than the recurring theme of "family." Of course "loss" has also been rather prominent in these episodes, too, which makes me anxious. But when has that not been the case and, come on, when have we ever gone into the finale without feeling anxious and/or expecting the worse? The title of the final episode does not bode well.

And, strangely, several of the comments made in Remember the Titans also stuck a chord with me because, in the end, that episode was not an episode in the mytharc at all and a few of the comments seemed to have greater meaning that was never really revealed in that self-contained, seemingly resolved plot.

Now I'm going to have to go back and watch Remember the Titans again. I agree that the themes of "family" and "loss" have been emphasized a lot, but really, no more than in other seasons. Interesting idea about Sam needing to be purified.

And, as an aside, That first shot of Dean with his hair parted like that with his adorable freckles and looking sharp in that uniform very nearly turned me into a Dean girl!!!

It's a good thing I had some delicious Still Totally Hot, now with bedhead, to reel me back in!!!!
