Whelp, this is the last full week of summer for Brandon and I didn't hole up in the house completely. (Yay me!) We went to see Inception which was pretty dang good and it was off to the pool today. The water was bathwater tepid but felt good collapsing into, nonetheless, after feeling a tad  wibbly-wobbly by the end of my walk. Serves me right for being a lazo the past two weeks.

The D*C catalog came in the mail but I still haven't really begun to get excited, though I am looking forward to seeing my friends! I discussed my trip with Brandon, today, to see where he might want to stay while I am gone. He said that he just wanted to spend the weekend at home. I think he is old enough but, still, I am a wee bit leery about him being in the house by himself, overnight ,and for the whole weekend. Am I being a worry wart? I do trust him not to destroy the place while I am gone. After all, I work 12 hour shifts and he is here alone for that. Is it as big a step as I am making it out to be?

[livejournal.com profile] de23 , after trying rather unsuccessfully to get into Making Money, I decided to just give it up for now and read Mort (The spreadsheet you sent me was very handy, even if I am still pretty confused.) I LOVED Mort!!  I felt these characters were pretty engaging from the very start and, I have to say, DEATH was a hoot! I found myself really empathizing with his Mid Eternity crisis, if there can be such a thing where eternity is concerned. There were plenty of LOL moments, the most recent being this bit:

In the great hall of the Unseen University, everything happened at once*

and then the post script at the bottom of the page,

*This was not precisely true. It is generally agreed by philosophers that the shortest time in which everything can happen is one thousand billion years.

Anyway, you think I could borrow a couple more from you that I can get next week or when we head to Apple Hill?

I finished Season 2 of Leverage with "The Fairy Godparents Job", "The Order 23 Job", and "The Ice Man Job" being among my favorites. "The Future Job" brought me to tears rather unexpectedly. But, why was Sophie out of it for much of it? Was she preggers or something? Anyway, I thought Jeri Ryan filled in nicely and even I was fooled during her introductory episode. Go writers! Oh, Hardison, you make me Happy! I suppose it will be awhile before season 3 is out. I don't even know what season they are on right now?

Ick, work tomorrow. What has happened my work ethic?  It used to be rather pronounced.

It depends on how old Brandon is. I suppose you could call him at least once or twice a day or have family come over?

Yes, I just got my Dragoncon booklet, too.

Well, he will be 16 in October. Old enough, maybe?

And I didn't realize that you were going to D*C. Awesome! Maybe we can meet up at some point.

He should be old enough.

Yes, a few of us LJers are going! I'm waiting to see the schedule and maybe we could have lunch or dinner or something.

I always have to laugh when we get the schedule and bring out the trusty highlighters. I remember one year there was a day where there was so much I wanted to see and do (that naturally had me walking the farthest distance between all the different hotels) that we never even had time to eat.

I don't think that will be a problem for me this year but you never know. Once we figure out the schedule, perhaps we can figure out a good time. Texting is a wonderful tool at the con! LOL

I haven't got my D*C booklet yet. It must take longer to get to Canada. ; )

What exactly is "Leverage" about? I keep hearing good stuff about it.

Well, De could tell you more as it is her current obsession. It's a show about a team comprised of thieves, con artists, and a computer expert/hacker led by a former insurance investigator. They use their skills in a sort of Robin Hood type way to help everyday citizens who have been cheated by powerful people or corporations and would have no recourse otherwise. The cons are wonderfully convoluted and very entertaining.

I usually only look at the catalog when it arrives. It does nothing for my eventual planning and highlighting of the schedule..LOL.

It's kind of like the A-Team, but updated and with more focus on the "con" parts - like a mini "The Sting" every week. The characters are really fun - they all have their flaws (Nate is the brilliant mastermind but also an alcoholic which makes for lots of conflict) and they're all criminals, but basically good guys. It can be silly at times, but mostly it's upbeat and fun and they always win, one way or another.

I think it would be okay to leave Brandon alone for the weekend but perhaps have a backup plan? Have you and other family check in with him regularly (but not so much he feels like he's being checked up on, if you know what I mean). And maybe have a plan in place that should he change his mind during the weekend and want to go somewhere else - like other family or a friend's house - he could.

I perused the D*C booklet, but I always forget there's no actual schedule in it - just some info about the various guests and fan tracks. However, I was reminded that this year the programming will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday! Which means we won't have our usual time that morning to "plan" our schedule for the weekend. We'll have to hit the ground running, so to speak. I'm also thinking of maybe trying to check out some of the music scene this year. Sure, there's a lot included that's not appealing to me, but I love Celtic and folk stuff so I'm intrigued to maybe learn more about some of the guest bands that fall under that genre.

Yes, I have considered heading off the beaten path a bit this year, though that will all depend on the schedule and whatnot.

10am is pretty early. I hadn't thought about us needing that time to formulate our con tactical plan. Eeek!

Sure thing! We have a lot of the books, although not all of them (that would be quite a feat!). Any particular titles that catch your interest? How about Colour of Magic, and see where it all started (Luggage!). DEATH is the most popular favorite character (although it sounds really weird if people don't know the series!). Of course, now I want to read some.

Re: Leverage and the Future Job - yeah, Parker's scene at the beginning was quite riveting! They're in the middle of S3 right now. No idea when the dvds will be out, but I still have them all on the tivo if you want me to put them on dvd for you. Whadya think of the S2 finale? Sterling! Blood! Kissing! Timothy Hutton not saying a word for 10 minutes and acting with his eyes! I loved it.

I think Brandon would be ok, but maybe you could have him go to your mom's for one meal a day or something? I know I would be nervous too.

Whatever (and whereever) you think is best re: Discworld. I do like characters I can get invested in, even DEATH!

Re: The Future Job. Actually, it wasn't that scene that did it, even if it was a riveting scene. Rather, it was the scene at the end where Nate is talking to the client.

I loved the S2 finale! Poor Nate. Always fun to see Sterling. I love how that character leaves them all unsettled.

What everyone else said. I stayed at home the first time when I was 16. My mom's best friend was on stand-by and I knew I could go to her place if I just couldn't take it anymore.

And it all worked out. I even managed my dog getting a bladder infection with no problem.

And it all worked out.

Well, I realize that I have to do it some time. At the moment, I am leaning toward giving it a go.
